Is ChatGPT safe for my business?

Your team is almost certainly using AI tools already, whether or not it is official. That is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to be deliberate. The question worth asking is not whether AI is safe, it is what data are we handing over, and what happens to it once we do.

The risk is the input, not the magic

Most of the exposure with AI tools comes down to what people paste in. Source code, customer records, contracts, internal strategy: once that leaves your environment, you are trusting a third party with it. Some tools train on your inputs by default. Some retain them. Some are perfectly safe when configured correctly. The difference matters, and it is usually buried in settings and terms most people never read.

You can say yes safely

The answer is rarely to ban these tools, which just pushes usage underground. It is to set a few clear rules: which tools are approved, what can and cannot go into them, and which settings and plans keep your data out of training. A short, honest AI policy plus the right account configuration lets your team move fast without quietly leaking the business.

If you are not sure what your team is already using, or what those tools do with your data, that is the first thing worth finding out. It is usually a quick conversation, and the answers are often reassuring once you actually look.
